12 Month Prescriptions – What You Need to Know

by | Jan 20, 2026 | Information Update

Nation-wide Change

From 1 February 2026, some long-term medicines may be prescribed for up to 12 months.

This national change aims to reduce unnecessary repeat appointments and to better support patients with stable, long-term conditions.

Important Information

Please note that:

  • 12-month prescriptions can only be issued during a face-to-face GP appointment.
  • An annual review is required.
  • A 12-month prescription is not automatic and may not be suitable for all patients.
  • Eligibility will be assessed by your GP. Please make an appointment to discuss whether this option is appropriate for you.

What Stays the Same

  • Medicines will continue to be dispensed by your pharmacy every 3 months
(or 6 months for some oral contraceptives).
  • Controlled medicines (for example, certain pain relief, sedative, or ADHD medications) are not eligible for 12-month prescriptions.
  • Ongoing monitoring (such as blood tests or blood pressure checks) may still be required.

Who May Be Eligible

You may be eligible if:

  • Your condition is stable, with the same medication and dose for at least 6 months.
  • All required monitoring is up to date.
  • You have had no recent side effects or complications.
  • You agree to attend an annual review (usually at around 10–11 months).

Who May Not Be Eligible

You may not be eligible if:

  • Your condition requires ongoing or frequent blood monitoring, for example:
    • diabetes
    • kidney (renal) impairment
    • thyroid conditions
  • Your medication requires frequent dose changes or close monitoring.
  • You have had recent changes to your health or a recent hospital admission.
  • You take multiple regular medicines, or closer follow-up is considered safer due to your condition or age.

What You Need To Do

  • Please discuss this with your GP at your next appointment.
  • If any reviews or tests are due, please arrange these promptly.

Thank you for your understanding as these changes are implemented. Our team will continue to work with you to ensure your care remains safe and appropriate.
